What is Gobeklitepe?

Throughout history, our cultural evolution has occurred as we all know; Agriculture allowed us to settle down, develop religious teachings, and build places of worship. Small settlements created cities, and cities formed powerful civilizations. According to the findings obtained from the excavations carried out with the support of the German Archeology Institute, Gobeklitepe breaks this routine. Gobeklitepee almost reveals that cultural evolution took place before agriculture. The trigger for this is religion, according to the findings. According to the ruins in Gobeklitepe, which was built exactly 12,000 years ago, a place of worship was built first to gather under the same roof. Afterward, a brand new process that extended to agricultural life started. The findings obtained as a result of the excavations carried out in Gobeklitepe proved that religion was the cause of the formation of civilizations before agriculture. The order we know has also changed. Findings from Gobeklitepe excavations, an area made during the Stone Age, bring to mind the following question; How did people who had not even met pottery and wheels at that time form this space? Although the answer to this question is still not fully known, this feature makes the field even more fascinating.

Who made Gobeklitepe?

The ruins found in Gobeklitepe provide various information about the people who built this area. Among these remains, there are many wild animal bones, stone fragments, and debris from the making and use of stone tools leftover from the meat that people ate. The area where the bones of animals such as gazelles and fallow deer are found shows that those who built this place were stone-ax hunters and gatherers living at that time. So, the transition to settled life in Gobeklitepe is the work of a pre-agricultural community.. These people are not primitive as we think they are, on the contrary, they are highly conscious and engineering-savvy communities. So much so that the people who lived in the Stone Age at that time used engineering methods that can be reached after thousands of years while making this place of worship. Hunters and gatherers are also people with an unexpected level of organizational ability. It takes 50 manpower to move an obelisk found in the excavations. Among these remains, the presence of many wild animal bones remaining from the meat people ate indicates that food feasts were held in this area. In order for humanity to build a structure like Gobeklitepe, it must have a settled structure. However, no findings regarding needs such as nutrition and shelter are encountered in the excavations. It shows that these communities spent their days here extracting stones, shaping the columns, and then going to the settlement. This settlement is probably Sanliurfa. Stone Age statues in Sanlıurfa prove this.

Gobeklitepe is a large place of worship, from circular structures to square structures. There are 20 separate prayer areas, including those identified under the ground. There are two large obelisks at the center of the places of worship that have been unearthed during excavations so far. Each of the T-shaped obelisks is 6 meters high and weighs 40 tons. Archaeologists argue that the pillars are stylized depictions of people. So much so that even if there were no facial motifs on the columns, the loincloths worn by people at that time were painted on these stones. Another view is that the columns may be the first gods depicted because of the lack of facial motifs. In this direction, these stones prove again that Gobeklitepe is the oldest place of worship in the world. These obelisks are also adorned with enormous animal figures dominated by predators. Animal figures in high reliefs are depicted as guards. These guards are thought of as the guards of the obelisks. Columns and carvings in Gobeklitepe, which is a turning point in the development of humanity, also reveal the new position of humanity against nature.

Why was it made?

Some experts think that Gobeklitepe was built as a place of worship dedicated to the dead. Circular rooms, the door found in the excavations, represent the doors to the underworld. Those who founded this extraordinary place of worship then bury it. Small buildings are built in the area, which has changed over the years during agricultural development. Communities that started to make a living by farming may have disregarded the value judgments of their ancestors and deliberately closed this area.
