And why? Because it has everything that should be in a city for its time. Streets, squares, inns, bazaars, and more… Ephesus is not only urbanized. Ephesus had religious importance due to being a port city during the Roman Empire, and a religious, administrative city due to hosting the Temple of Artemis. The harbor was under the ground for 1000 years as the earthquakes, the destruction of the Temple of Artemis, the Menderes River flooded due to rain and carried the soil. The port thus lost its importance. All these developments made it inevitable for the city to be abandoned. Ephesus, which was left alone for years, was discovered when archaeologists started the excavations by chance. Excavations lasted more than 100 years. The city is so large that after the excavations, we see only 20 percent of the city today. In fact, only the center of the city… It is thought that many places have not emerged in an area extending into Selcuk district and other nearby provinces since it has not been excavated yet. Who knows what else Ephesus will show us. It may even be enough to discover the highlights for now. Celsus Library, theater, Hillside Houses, Curetes Street, Hadrian's Temple, Harbor Street, Heracles Gate, Trajan Fountain, Agora, and Basilica are some of them.
